As part of Carers Week 2019, CAUSE Carers Gary English and Donna Hunter accompanied by CAUSE Trustee Sheira Byrne and CEO Valerie Sullivan, contributed to a Carers Week Policy Roundtable at Parliament Buildings, Stormont organised by the Coalition of Carers Organisations and hosted by Colm Gildernew MLA and Mervyn Storey MLA .

The event involved carers, health and social care professionals, MLAs and other policymakers, on changing the way Northern Ireland society recognises and supports those in caring unpaid for family and friends.
Given the growing number of carers in Northern Ireland, the roundtable was based around the following discussion areas:

• Need for sustainable funding of social care support
• Financial support for carers
• A more systematic approach to improving the health and well-being of carers and reducing loneliness
• The strengthening of workplace rights for carers
• Supporting the needs older carers and plans for their own future
• The identification of, and provision of breaks for carers
